What is Inoculated Grain Spawn?

Our Inoculated Grain Spawn are 5lb bags that have already been sterilized and inoculated with mushroom mycelium. The grain used may vary due to availability, but we have found Milo, Wheat Berries, and Rye Berries offer excellent results. Your order will be prepared with one of these three options.

What is substrate?

We use the word substrate when we refer to any substance mushrooms are grown on. Substrates can be any number of blended materials used for mushroom production. Our favorites include a mixture of oak pellets, soybean hull, and gypsum, pasteurized for a minimum of 22 hours. This works beautifully for our Lion’s Mane, Oysters, King Trumpets, Golden Enoki, etc. A blend of oak pellets and wheat bran makes for an excellent Shiitake substrate.

Do dried mushrooms expire?

Under careful storage, dried mushrooms are safe to use for a very long time. To extend shelf-life and prevent changes in flavor, scent, and coloration, you should take every possible step to reduce their exposure to air, heat, and light. Storing them in a dark, airtight container (rather than clear), prevents light and oxygen exposure. The back of your pantry or a drawer in your fridge are ideal storage locations. These conditions should keep your dried mushrooms happy for 1-3 years. If you use dried mushrooms frequently, you can separate them from your bulk package on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. This will reduce the number of times your bulk storage container is opened, protecting the mushrooms inside.

Can I pick up my order?

Absolutely! Please contact our Customer Service Department to order for pick up at 864-978-5466.

Why do so many of your products recommend expedited shipping?

Many of our products contain live, growing organisms that are sensitive to fluctuations in light, heat, oxygen, and agitation. The faster the shipping service, the less likely harm will occur during transit.

How can you tell when mushrooms have gone bad?

When stored properly, fresh mushrooms are good for 1-2 weeks. See our product descriptions for recommended storage suggestions. Signs of spoilage include slimy or wrinkly texture, strong odor, and changes in coloration. Always give your fresh mushrooms a good look over when you purchase, so you are familiar with their properties during peak freshness.

What is blotching?

Blotch refers to discoloration found on mushrooms that have been exposed to bacteria. While blotching is usually no threat to our health, we recommend carefully inspecting any produce before eating. Check your fresh mushrooms for discolored sections, typically in green, yellow, or brown shades.
